There will be different trainings going on throughout the day including a demo on fire starting and shelter building by LASAR. Everyone will be meeting at the beach around 8:40. Dan from HuMSAR is requesting an estimated count of participants by this Friday. If you plan on going or are hoping to go but are not entirely sure let me know anyway just so we can get an estimate, email Karen by Thursday, October 8th so she can get the information to HUMSAR.
HuMSAR is really excited about offering this training this year! This is just a reminder that I’m looking for an estimated number of members attending from each team. If I’ve already heard from you, thank you, but if not, please send me a guess by the end of the week if at all possible.
It would also be great if teams could send me a number of K9s that plan on attending and if they want to work HRD or other discipline. There are usually hikers on the trails, so larger air-scent problems won’t work, but off-trail and runaways are do-able. Please let us know. Also, DAWGS will be offering a K9 emergency first aid training.
Navigation Course – This will be a three leg course with a starting point and three waypoints. Participants will be given a topo map with coordinates of each waypoint. You’ll have to plot the points on the map, calculate the heading and distance to each point and use your compass to navigate. There will also be maps with all calculations complete for people new to navigation and just want to work on compass navigation without the extra work. All waypoints will be in UTM, so a GPS could be used to navigate as well.
One more bit of info: the Park is making us do a COVID response business plan for the event (they didn’t mention it until after all other paperwork was in). Thankfully, our team president is a Registered Nurse and a member of the Saratoga County COVID Response Team, so she’s taking care of it for us. We’ll need to show that we’re using masks and being reasonable with distancing at the sign in and briefing. Once people are off training, you’ll need to use your own judgement, but please be safe.
